Social Media Isn’t a Bulletin Board—It’s a Stage

Many business social media pages look like the bulletin board near the entrance of a grocery store: special offer, call today, free estimate, schedule now, repeat.

There is nothing wrong with promoting your business. But if every post asks the audience for something, there is very little reason for the audience to keep paying attention.

Social media works better when you think of it as a stage.

Give People More Than Commercials

Imagine a television channel that aired commercials twenty-four hours a day. Nobody would watch voluntarily. Yet businesses often create the social-media equivalent and wonder why engagement disappears.

A stronger content mix can educate, entertain, demonstrate, answer questions, tell customer stories, introduce employees, show transformations and participate in the community. Promotion still belongs in the mix; it simply does not have to carry the entire show.

Your Everyday Work Is Content

A roofer can explain why a leak appeared. A landscaper can show a transformation. A plumber can answer the question customers are embarrassed to ask. A mobile detailer can show a remarkable before-and-after. A septic company can correct a common myth. An electrician can explain why a breaker trips.

The challenge is rarely a lack of material. It is recognizing the stories already happening inside the workday.

Consistency Builds Familiarity

Most followers do not need your service today. That does not make today’s post wasted effort. Repeated useful and interesting impressions help make the company familiar. When a need eventually appears, the familiar business has a head start.

This connects directly to P.T. Barnum’s lesson about earning attention first. Attention is the entrance to everything that follows.

Put on a Better Show

Before posting, ask one question: Why would someone who is not buying today care about this? If the post teaches them something, surprises them, helps them, makes them smile or tells a good story, you probably have an answer.

Your Facebook page has an audience. Give them something worth watching.
